Comilla Victoria Government College is one of the oldest and renowned colleges in Comilla, Bangladesh. It is also one of the leading educational institutions in Chittagong division. The college is located beside Ranir Dighi, a historical pond, on 32 acres of land. The college offers higher secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various disciplines.

History of the College

The college was established in 1899 by Roy Bahadur Ananda Chandra Roy, a prominent zamindar and philanthropist of Comilla. He donated 50,000 rupees and 32 acres of land for the establishment of the college. He named the college after Queen Victoria, who was the Empress of India at that time. The college was inaugurated on September 24, 1899 by Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.

The first principal of the college was Sattendranath Boshu, who served until his death in 1903. He was succeeded by J.C. Chatterjee, who was the principal until 1916. The college started with only 20 students and four teachers. The first batch of students appeared for the Entrance Examination in 1901 and passed with distinction.

The college gradually expanded its academic programs and facilities over the years. In 1914, the college introduced Intermediate Arts and Science courses. In 1921, the college became affiliated with the University of Calcutta and started offering Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. In 1938, the college added Bachelor of Commerce degree to its curriculum. In 1947, after the partition of India, the college became affiliated with the University of Dhaka.

The college played a significant role in the national and cultural movements of Bangladesh. Many students and teachers of the college participated in the Language Movement of 1952, the Six-Point Movement of 1966, and the Liberation War of 1971. A memorial has been built inside the campus to commemorate the martyrs of these movements.

In 1972, the college became a government college under the Ministry of Education. In 1992, the college became affiliated with the National University and started offering Honours and Masters courses in various subjects. In 2017, the college celebrated its 118th anniversary with various programs and events.

Academic Programs and Facilities

The college has four faculties: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Social Science, and Faculty of Science. The college offers Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), Bachelor (Pass), Bachelor (Honours), Masters (Preliminary), and Masters (Final) courses in different subjects under these faculties.

The college has a total of 29,900 students and 147 teachers, of whom 36 are women. The college has a well-equipped library with more than 50,000 books and journals. The college also has a computer center, a language lab, a multimedia classroom, a seminar room, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, and a mosque.

The college has five dormitories: four for boys and one for girls. About 1,000 students reside in these dormitories. The dormitories have their own dining halls, common rooms, playgrounds, and gardens.

The college has a rich tradition of cultural and co-curricular activities. The college has 13 cultural organizations that organize various programs and events throughout the year. These organizations include BNCC (Army), BNCC (Air Force), Red Crescent, Victoria College Bitorko Parishad, Victoria College Theater, Rover Scouts, Campus Barta, Blood Donor Organization, Nongar, Botany Society, Career Club and Science Club.
